Hayward last day of school is May 30

At their April 2 meeting, the Hayward Community School Board voted to change the schedule for the last week of school, just after Memorial Day.

Students will attend all day Tuesday and Wednesday May 28-29, and half a day on Thursday May 30. Teachers will have talent development days on May 30, May 31 and June 3.

In other actions, the board received a letter of resignation from assistant boys basketball coach Sam Yoder, and voted to hire Eli Robbins as assistant boys golf coach.

Curriculum and grants coordinator Kelly Ryder said that student testing season is ongoing.

The curriculum committee approved programming for the three-week summer school (Canes Camp) in June, and forwarded the motion to the full board for action on April 15.

Ryder said the Northern Waters Environmental School has received a $22,000 grant from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture to partner with farmers to do research on soils.

Ryder added that the district has applied for a Community Learning Center grant for before-and-after school programs in 2024-25. If the district does not receive a grant, it may charge parents a fee for community education.

“Our goal is not to change anything from this year,” said Supt. Craig Olson. “We are not looking at dissolving the program.”

Ryder said a Family Reading Night will be held at the Primary School on April 24. There will be a free catered dinner, and each child will get a book.

Supt. Olson reported that the referendum building projects are “on track.” Construction is slated this summer at the intermediate and middle schools.

The remodeled high school will have a “Hayward Hall of Fame” for academic, cocurricular and athletic trophies and plaques, and a displayed article on how the Hurricanes sports teams first got their nickname in 1946.
