    HHS girls track squad wins third straight meet

    The Hayward Hurricanes girls track and field team took first place out of 11 teams and the Hurricane boys placed fourth out of 12 teams in the Packy Paquette Invitational hosted by Superior High School at the UW-Superior Fieldhouse Thursday April 4. This meet included several Division 1 schools.

    Girls meet

    Team scores: Hayward 101, Cameron 93, Chippewa Falls 77.7, Rice Lake 69.4, Turtle Lake-Clayton 60, Ashland 49, Superior 45, Northwestern 43, Eau Claire North 37.5, Cumberland 29, Spooner 15.4.

    Hayward first places: 4 X 800m relay (Maria Halberg, Lola Olsen, Macey Reier, Lydia Bergschneider), 10:41.77.

    Second places: Harper Sheehan 800m run, 2:33.02; 4 X 400m relay (Brianna Hexum, Danika Kortendick, Harper Sheehan, Lydia Bergschneider), 4:23.37; Helen Thompson high jump, 5-00; Avery Poppe triple jump, 33-09.75.

    Third places: Avery Poppe 220-yard dash, 27.77, and 400-meter dash, 1:02.75;

    Fourth places: Natalie Grubbs 55m dash, 7.81; Harper Sheehan 1,600m run, 5:40.27; 4 X 200m relay (Greta Schmitt, Melody Isham, Alivia Poppe, Natalie Grubbs), 1:57.20; Maria Halberg, long jump, 15-07.75.

    Fifth places; Lola Olsen 3,200m run, 13:25.50; Brianna Hexum 200m hurdles, 31.16; Avery Poppe (tie), high jump, 4-10; Harper Sheehan long jump, 15-07.50.

    Sixth places: Maria Halberg 3,200m run, 13:50.25.

    Boys meet

    Team scores: Chippewa Falls 102, Eau Claire North 93, Rice Lake 92.5, Hayward 87.5, Ashland 79, Northwestern 53, Turtle Lake-Clayton 31 Superior 24, Shell Lake 18, Cameron 16, Spooner 15, Cumberland 11.

    Hayward first places: Ben Laird 800-meter run, 2:04.24; Lucas Hansen 200-meter hurdles, 26.62; Lucas Hansen long jump, 20-06.25.

    Second places: Ben Laird 1,600-meter run, 4:46.26; Evan McConnell 3,200-meter run, 10:41.65; Bradley Young high jump, 5-08.

    Third places:

    Fourth places: Gannon Mohr 400-meter dash, 55.51; 4 X 400-meter relay (Alex DePew, Brendan Young, Gannon Mohr, Ben Laird), 3;48.73; 4 X 800-meter relay (Aiden Susedik, Christian Larson, Austin Ewert, Evan McConnell), 9:07.50.

    Fifth places: Lucas Hansen 55-meter hurdles, 8.51.

    Sixth places: Cade Schlapper triple jump, 37-05.25.

    “We’re off to a great start this season, especially with the minimal amount of snow that has allowed us to get on the track as quickly as the first week of practice—which has never happened since I’ve been coaching,” said Coach Ben DiSera.

    “We have a lot of new athletes on the team in all grades and I think this group is really hungry for hard work and success this year, of which we’ve seen both,” DiSera said.
