The Hayward Hurricanes baseball team edged the Cameron Comets 1-0 at Larry Somerville Field on a cold and windy Friday April 19 to notch their fifth win in a row and move into first place in the Heart O’ North Conference.

The Canes improved to 5-1 in the Heart O’North and 7-2 overall.

Starting pitcher Thomas Fischer earned the win, going 4 1/3 innings, giving up two hits and walking two. Brody Roach came in and earned the save, giving three hits and striking out one.

The Canes scored the game’s only run in the fourth inning when Tyler Eaton beat out an infield single and stole second. With Dawson Jorczak at the plate, Cameron pitcher Tyson Lucas uncorked a wild pitch. The throw from the catcher caromed off Jorczak into the infield and Eaton came around third and scored.

Nate Harrison had the Canes’ only other hit, a double.

On Thursday April 18, the Hurricanes beat the Spooner Rails 11-1 with a 17-hit attack at Merchants Field in Spooner.
