With a nod toward Hayward’s deep-seated timber roots, runners and walkers can channel their flannel at the Backroads Coffee Lumberjack 5K Run-Walk Saturday, Aug. 3.

The 5K (3.1 mile) Lumberjack Run starts at 8 a.m. on Hall of Fame Drive next to Lumberjack Bowl, home of the Lumberjack World Championships.

Participants will traverse a route through city streets and a pedestrian trail on the southeast side of Hayward, finishing behind the grandstand at Lumberjack Bowl.

After their race, runners and walkers can recover with with watermelon, Backroads scones, cookies and water.

Runners and walkers are invited to dress up in their best Lumberjack attire for a dance to win an entry to a Birkie event.

There are prizes for the top male and female winners. All runners and walkers are entered into a drawing to win a free entry to any individual American Birkebeiner event, including the Birkebeiner ski races, Birkie Trail Run Festival or Fat Bike Birkie. All registered entrants receive a T-shirt.

Registration is available only in advance, at the Birkie’s website. There is no race day registration.
