HHS golfers open season with win

The Hayward Hurricanes girls golf team won a three-team nine-hole contest at Cumberland Golf Course Wednesday Aug. 21.

The Canes carded 216 strokes, while Luck-Unity-Frederic finished with 242 and Cumberland scored 257.

Luck’s Jordan Olson was the medalist with a round of 45. Tara Eckes led the Canes with a 47 and placed second overall, while Sofia Bonicatto carded 49, Macie Mavis scored 57, Lexie Sullivan 63 and Macie Reinke 69.

On Friday Aug. 16, the Hurricanes played in a multi-team event at Rolling Oaks in Barron.

Hudson and Eau Claire Memorial tied for first in the six-team Division One with scores of 64.

In Division Two, Spooner took first with 62, followed by Ellsworth with 64, Colfax-Elk Mound and Luck with scores of 66 and Baldwin-Woodville with 69. The Hurricanes tied with Cumberland for sixth place out of 12 teams with scores of 71. Northwestern had 72, St. Croix Falls 76, Somerset 77, Rice Lake 81 and Chetek 83.
