The Hayward Hurricanes boys soccer team opened their season Tuesday Aug. 27 with a 3-0 win over the Baldwin-Woodville Blackhawks at Heidi Friermood Field.

Teddy Winter shot and scored on a free kick in the eighth minute to open the scoring. Nolan Kane then put Hayward up 2-0 in the 20th minute, assisted by Luke Halberg.

Noah Hill scored off an assist by Nolan Kane in the second half, putting Hayward up 3-0 in the 54th minute.

Charles Egger got the clean sheet in the net with 14 saves.

“We’re really proud of how our whole team played,” said Coach Jeremy Hill. “Winning the season opening game at home is a great way to start the season.

“With three great seniors graduating last year in Robert, Mitch and Warren, Coach Lobitz and I were happy to have gained six talented freshmen this year, who all performed very well in their varsity debut. We were really happy to see the team play with physicality, skill and unselfishness, which led to great scoring opportunities, and our defense worked really well together to stop the Baldwin attacks. “The veteran players stepped up and had huge games, and worked together really well, showing their years of work as a team.

Charles Egger saved 14 shots in the net, some of which were impressive saves as they were power shots at close range, to secure the win.”

On Thursday Aug. 29, the Hurricanes played at Barron. The game was stopped early due to lightning, with the score tied at 1-1.

In the first half, Charles Egger scored on a free kick from the 45 yard line, to put Hayward up 1-0. Then in the second half Barron tied it.

“Our guys played tough this game,” said Coach Hill. “We controlled the game the first half, but Barron made some good adjustments at halftime and came out and had more possessions than us .

“We were down a few starters this week, so we look forward to a full team at next week’s match, at home vs Cumberland at 5 p.m. Thursday Sept. 5. We also play at home Tuesday Sept 10 against Rice Lake.”
