    Canes girls golf continues strong play

    The Hayward Hurricanes girls golf team scored a season-low 182 in a nine-hole match with Cumberland and Northwestern Thursday Sept. 19 at Big Fish Golf Course. The Beavers were second with 204 and the Tigers third with 213.

    Senior Tara Eckes shot 38 to win the first place medal. Senior Sofia Bonicatto took second with a 43, sophomore Macie Mavis was fifth with a 49. And sophomore Lexis Sullivan placed ninth with a 52.

    The Canes improved their record to 12-2.

    “The girls played great and are looking ready for the upcoming tournament season,” said Coach Wade Reier. “Our seniors continue to shine.”

    On Monday Sept. 16 the Hurricanes took first in a three-team nine-hole match at Chequamegon Bay in Ashland. The Canes carded 184 strokes, Grantsburg scored 256 and the host Oredockers scored 258.

    The Canes swept the top four spots, as Tara Eckes shot a career low 35 (one under par) to take the first place medal.

    Sofia Bonicatto was second with 46, Lexie Sullivan was third with 47 and Macie Reinke fourth with 56. Emma Blinkwolt was seventh with 60.

    The Hurricanes improved their record to 12-2 in Heart O’ North Conference play going into this week.

    The conference meet is at Luck on Sept. 25 and the WIAA regional playoffs are Tuesday Oct. 2 at Spooner.
