    Canes girls golf takes second at conference meet

    The Hayward Hurricanes girls golf team finished their regular season by taking second at the Heart O’ North Conference tournament at Luck on Sept. 25.

    Leading the canes was senior Tara Eckes (Heart of the North Player of the year), shooting an 85, followed by Sofia Bonicatto 94, Lexie Sullivan 102, Macie Mavis 103 and Emma Blinkwolt, 133.

    Heart O’ North Conference tourney team scores: Spooner, 358; Hayward, 384; Superior, 399; Northwestern, 429; Luck-Unity-Frederic, 435; Ladysmith 492; Grantsburg 511; Ashland 519; Chetek-Weyerhaeuser, 530.

    Top 10 players: Avery Voelz, Spooner, 77; Layla Thompson, Spooner, 83; Tara Eckes, Hayward, 85; Tara Stratton, Superior, 89; Ava Thompson, Spooner, 90; Reagan Eberhardt, Northwestern, 92; Sofia Bonicatto, Hayward, 94; Jadyn Thaemert, L-U-F, 97; Kenzie Fleck, St. Croix Falls, 98.

    Other Hayward scores: Lexie Sullivan, 17th, 102; Macie Mavis, 18th, 103; Emma Blinkwolt, 41st, 133.

    On Monday Sept. 23, the Hurricanes placed second in a three-team nine-hole meet at Spooner Golf Course. The host Rails took first with a score of 172, followed by Hayward with 193 and St. Croix Falls with 225.

    Spooner’s Avery Voeltz and Layla Thompson were the co-medalists with scores of 39.

    Hayward’s Tara Eckes placed fourth with 45, Sofia Bonicatto was sixth with 48, Lexie Sullivan seventh with 49. Macie Mavis ninth with 51 and Emma Blinkwolt 14th with 69.
