Kids have fishing fun at Shue's Pond
On June 12, the Wisconsin DNR, SCOPE, the Northwest Connections Family Resource Center, and the Terry Peterson Fishing Foundation hosted a “Moms and Kids Fishing Night” at Shue’s Pond in Hayward. Hartford wins Hayward baseball tournament
The Hartford Hawks emerged as the champions of the six-team Chippewa Valley Bank Northern Lights Baseball Tournament over the June 14-16 weekend at Larry Somerville Field. Hartford defeated the Hayward Hawks 3-0 in Sunday’s championship game. Hayward opened the tournament with a 7-0 win over the Holmen Features Friday night. Sawyer Dairy Breakfast to be held June 22
In celebration of June Dairy Month, a Sawyer County dairy breakfast will be hosted by Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin from 6:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday June 22 at the Sawyer County Fairgrounds, on Hwy. B three miles east of Hwy. 27. The menu will feature pancakes, blueberry pancakes, chocolate chip pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausages, string cheese, ice cream, strawberries, whipped cream, soft-serve ice cream cones, milk, coffee and cranberry juice. The cost is $9 for guests ages 13 and older, $6 for ages 4-12, and free for ages three and under.

American Birkebeiner Executive Director Ben Popp has been elected president of the Worldloppet International Ski Federation. The Worldloppet member delegates voted this past week at their annual summit in Sapporo, Japan, the venue of Sapporo Ski Marathon. Ben Popp replaces Juha Viljamaa from Lahti, Finland, who has been the representing face of the Worldloppet organization and the global cross-country skiing community for the past 8 years. School board waives athlete participation, sports spectator fees
Athletes again will be able to participate in Hayward Hurricanes sports free of charge, and fans will be able to watch Hurricane games on a donation basis in 2024-25, as approved by the Hayward Community Schools Board of Education Monday June 17. In other actions, the board voted to renew insurance coverage for Worker’s Compensation, property including equipment breakdown, crime, errors and omissions coverage, violent acts, and commercial vehicles for a premium of $236,280, which is a decrease from $239,791 in 2023-24. ...

Linda Ellwein was the proxy winner on #15 with the closest chip. There is still room for more ladies to join this fun league. Sawyer County set new record for tourism in 2023
The Wisconsin Department of Tourism released 2023 economic impact data, showing Sawyer County tourism experienced a record-breaking 2023, generating $150 million and contributing to Wisconsin tourism’s historic $25 billion economic impact. Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University broke ground Monday June 10 for a new dormitory that will house 82 students on campus as part of its long-range master facility plan. Musky Fest fishing contest to be held June 20-22
The Hayward Lakes Chapter of Muskies Inc. and the Hayward Bass Club will host the 2024 Hayward Musky Festival catch-and-release fishing contest June 20-22 on area lakes, rivers and flowages. Epic Bike restival draws over 1,000 racers
Pro mountain bike racers familiar to the Hayward-Cable area won the Epic Bike Festival cross-country races hosted by the American Birkebeiner Foundation over the June 8-9 weekend. Riders were greeted by mostly sunny, cool weather and packy trails.
