As high water recedes, communities on the coast and along the lower Kuskokwim River are taking stock of flood damage and erosion after two windy storms in quick succession filled rivers and streams and flooded low-lying areas. ANCHORAGE, AK — Oceana, represented by Earthjustice, filed a lawsuit in federal court arguing that the National Marine Fisheries (NMFS) failed to meet obligations under the Magnuson Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) to protect corals, sponges and other seafloor habitats from bottom trawling.

The annual Ester Fest kicked off Saturday, Aug. 10 in the Ester Community Park outside of Fairbanks. The festival is held each summer as a fundraiser for the maintenance and improvement of the park. More than 40 vendors contributed as well. Musical artists such as The Skidmarks, Tim Easton, and Acts of Congress performed on stage for the event.
Five Engineers Promoted at RSA

Jeremy Maxie is promoted to Principal Electrical Engineer. Maxie, who has been with RSA for fourteen years, now provides principal-level oversight and leadership while managing his own projects. Known for his exceptional client dedication and mentoring skills, Maxie specializes in special system designs including security, door access, video/camera, and fire alarms. Maxie is a licensed professional engineer and lighting certified, and he holds a certification from Registered Communications Distribution Designers. He is a past president of the Illuminating Engineering Society Anchorage Chapter and a current board member of the A4LE Alaska Chapter.

The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to strengthening the Coast Guard community and service by supporting members and families, announced that its emergency disaster relief program is providing vital assistance to Coast Guard members and their families impacted by Hurricanes Beryl, Tropical Storm Debby, and glacial flooding in Juneau, Alaska. The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season has already proven to be one of the most challenging in recent memory. Hurricane Beryl, a powerful Category 1 storm, made landfall in Texas, bringing with it catastrophic winds, flooding and widespread destruction. Shortly after, Tropical Storm Debby followed, bringing damaging wind, heavy rains and flooding to multiple states on the East Coast, including Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. Then, just last week, a glacial dam burst releasing floodwaters that damaged more than 100 homes in Alaska.
