Two visitors treated for injuries after being struck in Sitka intersection
Two out-of-town visitors were treated for minor injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Sitka’s downtown intersection on Monday (8-19-24). According to a Sitka Police Department spokesperson, a driver was attempting to complete a left turn at Lake and Lincoln streets, just as an oncoming tour bus was entering the intersection. The driver failed to notice two people in the crosswalk, and struck both.

Jenae Larson’s Playground Opens Just In Time For New School Year
Saturday afternoon saw the long anticipated opening of Jenae Larson’s Playground. Planning for the playground has been happening since early 2021, just months after the Beach Road landslide took the lives of David Simmons and Jenae. A graduate of Haines High School, Jenae Larson returned to her hometown to work as the kindergarten teacher at Haines Elementary School at the time of her death. Jenae’s mother, Kim Larson, said her daughter had always wanted a new playground for her students. Kim Larson and other supporters began fundraising for that goal in March 2021.

Episode 24: The Irene Ingle Public Library will host Petersburg-based artist Ashley Lohr, who owns her jewelry business The Rosie Finn. Lohr will teach a workshop on how to make torch fired enamel earrings. She speaks with KSTK’s Colette Czarnecki on her process with jewelry making, her passion with it and what to expect at her workshop, for those who were lucky enough to reserve a spot before it reached its maximum capacity. The conversation was pre-recorded by telephone while Lohr waited in an airport, so a loudspeaker can be heard periodically throughout.
Hunting area expands for this years caribou season
Biologists have expanded the area for hunting caribou on the Nushagak Peninsula to reduce the size of the herd. The season began on August 1st. The caribou population on the Nushagak Peninsula is thriving, with an estimated 600 caribou, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Andy Aderman, a wildlife biologist with the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge, says there is a need to significantly reduce that number.

FAIRBANKS - Today is the last day to sign up for the Alaska Nanooks All-Women's Hockey Camp. The camp is open to all female participants over the age of 18. For the three-day camp held August 21 to 23, attendees will hit the ice with current and former Nanooks hockey coaches and players. Coast Guard names Juneau as home port for new icebreaker
The U.S. Coast Guard recently announced that it will homeport a commercially procured icebreaker in Juneau, Alaska. The Coast Guard is acquiring the Aiviq, a U.S.-registered vessel originally designed for Arctic oil exploration. With modifications, it will be equipped to serve as a medium polar icebreaker for the Coast Guard, thanks to its icebreaking capabilities.

University of Alaska and graduate student union reach three-year contract
A new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the University of Alaska and the Alaska Graduate Workers Association-UAW Union (AGWA-UAW) took effect on July 1. This is the first time the University of Alaska and AGWA have negotiated a CBA. The agreement comes less than a year after University of Alaska graduate student employees voted to form a union.

ANCHORAGE, AK — Oceana, represented by Earthjustice, filed a lawsuit in federal court arguing that the National Marine Fisheries (NMFS) failed to meet obligations under the Magnuson Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) to protect corals, sponges and other seafloor habitats from bottom trawling.

The annual Ester Fest kicked off Saturday, Aug. 10 in the Ester Community Park outside of Fairbanks. The festival is held each summer as a fundraiser for the maintenance and improvement of the park. More than 40 vendors contributed as well. Musical artists such as The Skidmarks, Tim Easton, and Acts of Congress performed on stage for the event.
