For the second consecutive season, Scappoose High School senior Alice Davidson won the 4A 100 and 200 meters at the OSAA track and field state championships on Saturday, May 18, at Hayward Field in Eugene.

Davidson clinched the state title in the 100 by 0.22 seconds, clocking in at 12.32, a personal best. She needed another personal best to win the 200, crossing in 24.97.

“I’m just so grateful to have the experience and be able to be out here,” Davidson said. “I had to meet a certain point to perform. It was just a lot of pressure going into it, but I think I did well and my coaches really helped me with that.”

Beyond her individual titles, Davidson helped the 4x400 relay team of Emily Garcia Ensaldo, Taylor Bourgoine and Peyton Lennox reached the top of the podium, running a time of 4:04.94.

Lennox too did work on her own, winning a state title in the 300 Meter Hurdles event, finishing with a personal best time of 46.25 and narrowly defeating second place finisher, Joey Clark (46.40) of Hidden Valley.

The Indian senior’s state championship came on the heels of a second-place finish at the Cowapa League District Championships a week prior.

This was also the first year that Lennox competed in the hurdles, after running strictly sprints in season’s prior, including a third-place finish in the 400 Meters at last year’s state championships.

Other Scappoose girls state participants included sophomore Taylor Bourgoine who in addition to her part in the winning 4x400 Relay team, placed sixth in the 800 Meters with a time of 2:23.87; senior Megan Earl placed 10th in the Javelin with a throw of 30.61m; junior Aubrey Strang placed 11th in the 1500 Meters with a time of 5:06.51; and senior Ellie Miller placed 11th in the Discus with a throw of 28.92m.

All of the aforementioned girls helped lead the Indians to a fourth place team finish, tallying 43 points, placing them 31 points behind first place Philomath.

Scappoose boys participants were led by the 4x400 Relay team that finished third, consisting of senior Landon Bourgoine, junior Grayson Miner, and sophomores Drew Butler and Cameron Dierdorff.

Other boys finishers included Miner who placed 13th in the 1500 Meters with a time of 4:24.45; freshman Bennett Fink who was seventh in the 110 Meter Hurdles with a time of 16.65; senior Taiki Ogawa who was 10th in the 3000 Meters with a time of 9:30.22; and the 4x100 Relay team made up of Butler, Fink, sophomore Max Everett, and senior Warren Haatia that placed eighth with a time of 44.90.

St. Helens too was represented at the state championships, qualifying eight girls and two boys for the meet.

The Lion boys were led by junior Cameron Cox who placed fifth in the 110 Meter Hurdles with a time of 16.22.

Cox improved his 110 Hurdles time by more than two seconds over his best mark from the year prior.

The junior also qualified for state in the 300 Meter Hurdles, narrowly missing qualifying for the finals.

Cox too improved his personal best time this season from last in the 300, running 42.16 in winning the Cowapa League Championships on May 8, besting his 2023 personal record by nearly 3.5 seconds.

Senior Cole Leader also placed 11th in the Triple Jump with a mark of 12.14m.

The St. Helens girls were led by junior Kallee Kester who placed fifth in the 100 Meter Hurdles, finishing with a time of 16.25.

Kester was also part of the Lions 4x100 Relay team consisting of juniors Keely Scoville, Lulu Prussic, and Hayden Moore that placed 13th with a time of 52.20.

Scoville also competed in the Triple Jump, placing 11th with a mark of 9.58m.

Other Lion participants included junior Bella Meuchel who placed seventh in the Javelin with a throw of 33.32m; along with freshman Leah Yarbor who placed 10th in the Shot Put with a throw of 9.86m.
