SCHAUMBURG (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A Schaumburg man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting a tree trimmer and then barricading himself from police for hours on Wednesday.

Michael Lang, 55, also faces aggravated battery charges. At a court appearance on Friday, the judge ruled he should remain in custody, saying Lang poses a threat to the public.

Schaumburg police said when officers arrived Wednesday afternoon to Braintree Drive they found a 66-year-old man from Hanover Park had been shot. He was working as part of a tree-trimming crew that police said Lang had yelled at for making too much noise and ordered to leave.

The crew was actually packing up when police said Lang got a handgun from his car and shot the man in the stomach before retreating to his home.

The tree-trimming crew was hired by Lang's parents, who he shares a home with. Lang's parents were not home at the time of the shooting.

After a nearly seven hour standoff, with heavily armed police surrounding the house, Lang surrendered peacefully.

Prosecutors say Lang called 911 twice during the standoff, saying that he was receiving messages from outer space.

A public defender told the court that Lang is a lawyer and has his own practice. He is due back in court on Aug. 23.
