SCHENECTADY, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — Leaders in Schenectady recognized the Fourth of July on Thursday with the city’s first reading of the Declaration of Independence. While many modern celebrations focus on fireworks, Schenectady officials wanted to ensure the holiday’s original purpose is not forgotten.

They also said the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution still have important messages and should not be overlooked.

The idea to have a reading was first brought up by Councilwoman Carmel Patrick, who grew up outside Boston and heard readings there. She wanted to start a similar tradition in the Capital Region.
