Whiting Park Festival Orchestra kicks off Summer with the Symphony 2024 season with concert celebrating Mother Nature’s power
On the cool evening of Saturday, July 20, the Whiting Park Festival Orchestra (WPFO) performed the first concert of its Summer with the Symphony series at Whiting Lakefront Park’s Mary E. Bercik Memorial Pavilion. The theme of this free concert was “Don’t Mess with Mother Nature!” Attendees set up their lawn chairs and folding tables on the grass in front of the pavilion, either enjoying snacks from home or snacking on treats from the concession stand. Martin Dybel, general manager of the WPFO, founded the orchestra alongside conductor Maestro Robert Vodnoy in 1999. Dybel also established the Summer with the Symphony concerts in 1994 and believes that the program has had a significant positive impact on the Whiting community.

Northwest Indiana Symphony Performs in the Great Outdoors
In Saturday’s (7/20) Lansing Journal (Illinois), Paul Czapkowicz writes, “A picture-perfect Friday night drew an estimated crowd of 1,500 to the Fox Pointe concert venue to hear the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra (NISO) perform for the fourth consecutive year in Lansing. People lined up to enter the venue over an hour before the show. The concert included selections ranging from patriotic offerings such as ‘America the Beautiful’ and the ‘Liberty Bell March’ to movie music from ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Lord of the Rings.’ The show contained a nod to the upcoming Summer Olympics with a performance of ‘Olympic Fanfare and Theme’ by composer John Williams. It even felt like Christmas in July for a while as the Symphony played a spirited rendition of ‘Sleigh Ride.’ Friday marked the start of NISO’s South Shore Summer Music Festival series that involves seven free outdoor performances. The remaining six shows will take place in Gary, Crown Point, Munster, Valparaiso, Hammond, and Griffith…. Kirk Muspratt, NISO’s music director/conductor for over 20 years, [called] the venue … ‘lovely. It’s intimate. The sound is great.’ ”

The last show I saw at Chicago Theater before I played on that stage was Iggy Pop! If you would’ve told me back then that 5 years later I’d be standing on that stage I would not have believed you.
