29 Student-Athletes Receive Long Island Junior Soccer League Scholarships
The Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL), the largest league in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA), has the largest scholarship program in Eastern New York. The league distributed 29 scholarships at the LIJSL Scholarship Breakfast on Sunday, July 21 at the Huntington Hilton. These well-rounded teenagers, selected based on academic and athletic excellence plus community service, exemplify the mission of the league and its idealistic slogan of “Building Character Through Soccer.”

While often considered more of a source for winter athletes, the Rochester area has a long history of participation in the Summer Olympic Games, dating to when the Canandaigua-born William Lewis and Waterloo-born Harry Lee participated in track and field events in the 1900 Games in Paris. The area’s first gold medalists came in 1904, when Charles Jacobus– born in Seneca, Ontario County- came in first in the croquet-style sport of roque in the only year it was an Olympic sport, while Orleans County’s David Munson took home gold as part of a team four-mile event. In 1924, in Paris, runner Bill Cox became the first Monroe County native to win an Olympic medal, taking bronze in the 3,000-meter team race.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that New York State recently hosted the 2024 “Raven’s Challenge,” the world’s largest annual training exercise for public safety bomb squads and military explosive ordnance disposal teams at the State Preparedness Training Center (SPTC) in Oriskany, NY. Bomb technicians and military personnel representing various places around New York State, the country, and the world, including Germany, Poland, Ukraine, and Canada, participated in the exercise and engaged in training on response tactics for improvised explosive devices.
