Southern Miss baseball had four players picked in this week’s MLB Draft. DJ Layton, a Southern Miss shortstop signee, went in the sixth round to the Baltimore Orioles; starting pitcher Niko Mazza was taken in the eighth round by the San Francisco Giants; junior college transfer pitcher Lucas Elissalt was picked by the Detroit Tigers in the 13th round and center fielder Dalton McIntyre was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in Round 19.
Assisted living facility site moves to Gluckstadt after withdrawing Livingston proposal
The Oaks, an assisted living facility initially intended for Livingston, will now begin construction in Gluckstadt following unanimous approval from the Board of Aldermen. Husband and wife duo Chad and Crystal Phillips are the developers behind The Oaks. Chad, a charge nurse and native of Madison, said he and Crystal, a real estate agent, wanted to contribute much-needed support for seniors and disabled individuals in Madison County.

Mississippi Miss Hospitality crowned its newest representative, Chloe Grace Weeks
Chloe Grace Weeks of Winston County was crowned the 2024 Mississippi Miss Hospitality on Saturday during the competition at the Saenger Theater in downtown Hattiesburg. She was one of 42 contestants throughout the state competing for the title. She was crowned by 2023 Miss Hospitality Abney Grace Pittman of Wayne County at the end of the program.

Coach Chris Lemonis and the Mississippi State baseball staff may be able to sleep a little easier these days. 18 of 20 members of the 2024 signing class are headed to campus. The two defections from the class that opted for pro ball are Dante Nori (Philadelphia, 1st Round) and Conrad Cason (Boston, 8th round).
