SCOTIA, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) -Chief David Wood and his crew are moving into their new, almost 9-million-dollar station. The project began in 2020 as Scotia’s previous facility was no longer fit for a modern workday.

“We couldn’t even pull the trucks all the way out because they were out in the road just to clear the garage door. The building is big enough to house all of our apparatus. Before, I was storing rigs off-site because they wouldn’t fit,” said Chief Wood.

There’s also more room for career and volunteer firefighters to keep up with essential training. And when it comes to safety, new washing machines and a shower keep out the carcinogens.

“This black wall here is a training wall. It has two windows of different sizes to practice our self-escape. Firefighters can come in from the outside, not expose the building to anything because this is a contained room, decon here and then move forward,” explained Chief Wood.

The station is part of a two-phase project; Chief Wood says the old station is being converted into Village office space. While the new facility came in right around budget, the Village needs more capital to finish the second phase. NEWS10’s Anthony Krolikowski has reached out to the mayor’s office to learn more about the funding and is awaiting a response.
