Deep Brain stimulation, cannabis usage and dopamine agonists – these are the topics of discussion at the upcoming panel seminar hosted by the Scottsdale-based Movement Disorders Center of Arizona (MDCA).

Discussing a host of treatments for Parkinson’s Disease, MDCA Founder Dr. Virgilio Gerald Evidente seeks to educate the community on what is happening in the medical community on movement disorders like Parkinson’s, Huntington’s disease and other movement disorders in the upcoming panel seminar entitled, “Controversies in the Use of Medications, Herbs and Early DBS for Parkinson’s.”

Evidente is joined by Dr. Paarth Shah of Foothills Neurology in Phoenix to present on the efficacy and evidence of Parkinson’s Disease supplements, the safety of cannabis use for treating movement disorders and the timing and usage of levodopa, a dopamine replacement agent medication commonly used to treat Parkinson’s disease by increasing dopamine levels in the brain to alleviate symptoms like tremors and stiffness.

The two will also pose questions such as, “Should elderly patients be put on dopamine agonists?” and “Should deep brain stimulation (DBS) be offered earlier in PD rather than later? If so, how early?”

“We host quarterly events on topics like Parkinson’s, tremors and Huntington’s disease just to educate people on the new things that are going on in the medical community,” Lynette Benham said, MDCA’s executive director.
