Better Business Bureau Serving Pacific Southwest, in partnership with Arizona Interscholastic Association, has named Jack Strang from Horizon High School, 5601 E. Greenway Road, as a BBB Ethical Athlete Scholarship recipient. The BBB Ethical Athlete Scholarship program honors student’s ethical behaviors and positive influence on others for their actions on and off the field.

Nominated by his teacher, Dr. Yvonne Perot shared how Jack helped a student realize how important it is to lead with integrity. Instead of reporting the student’s unethical behavior to her, Jack encouraged the student to do the right thing so he could come to his own conclusions about the importance of honesty.

“Jack witnessed a student cheat, pulled him aside and told him how critical it was to have integrity not just on quizzes but in life,” shared Dr. Perot. A few days later, the student approached Dr. Perot to share that he cheated on a quiz and that his grade should be a zero because of what Jack said to him that day.

“Not only was I impressed that Jack took it upon himself to speak with the student, I was further impressed that he saw fit not to share the exchange with me. Jack knows how important it is to lead with integrity in his actions whether it is in the classroom, golf course, baseball field or with his family and friends,” said Dr. Perot.

Through community and self-nominations, high school students are evaluated for the scholarship by a panel of judges for their ability to uphold integrity in the face of ethical and personal challenges when playing a sport. The program honors these behaviors and their positive influence on others.

Arizona high school athletes must have a GPA of at least 2.75, enrolled in an AIA sanctioned school while participating in an AIA sanctioned sport are eligible to be nominated for the scholarship.
