In partnership with the Center for Jewish Philanthropy, the Phoenix Holocaust Association will host its annual community-wide Yom HaShoah commemoration this weekend.

Yom HaShoah, also known as Holocaust Remembrance Day, occurs every spring as a day of commemoration for victims of the Holocaust. The day is dedicated to remembering the millions of lives lost to Nazi persecution as well as reflecting on the courageous acts of those who resisted the brutal regime.

It is also an event to honor Holocaust survivors in the Valley community with a candle lighting ceremony. The commemoration starts at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 5 on the Ina Levine Jewish Community Campus, 12701 N. Scottsdale Road, in Scottsdale.

An introductory session entitled “Memories Among the Generations” will begin at 3 p.m. featuring Charlotte Adelman, who was a hidden child in France; and the community-wide commemoration will immediately follow at 4 pm.

Richard Kasper, Center for Jewish Philanthropy executive director, will offer opening remarks, Rabbi Pinchas Allouche of Congregation Beth Tefillah will be delivering the invocation, and Cantor Dannah Rubinstein of Congregation Or Tzion will lead the commemoration.

The presentation of the Phoenix Holocaust Association’s annual Shofar Zakhor Awards, recognizing those who educate the community about the Holocaust, will also take place during the commemoration. The 2024 awards winners are Scottsdale Unified School District English teacher Sandy Flayton and Heather Land, English teacher at Mountain View High School in Mesa.

Organizations partnering with Phoenix Holocaust Association and the Center for Jewish Philanthropy for this year’s Yom HaShoah commemorative events include Ina Levine Jewish Community Campus, Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center, NowGen, 3GAZ, Bureau of Jewish Education, Temple Solel, Congregation Or Tzion, ASU Hillel, Temple Beth Shalom of the West Valley, Temple Kol Ami, Beth El Congregation, Arizona Jewish Historical Society, Congregation Kehillah, ADL Arizona, Congregation Beth Israel, Temple Chai, Congregation Beth Tefillah, Temple Emanuel, Valley Beit Midrash, Hebrew High, Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Phoenix, JNF-USA, Greater Phoenix Jewish Film Festival, Pardes Jewish Day School, Chabad at ASU, Hadassah Valley of the Sun, Shevet Shemesh, and Rosenbluth Family Charitable Foundation Genocide Awareness Week.
