The City of Scottsdale has closed the intersection of Chaparral and Hayden roads until Sept. 1 to construct a new pedestrian underpass.

The new underpass will connect Chaparral Park and Camelback Park and create a separate crossing for bicyclists and pedestrians. It will also increase green signal time for motorists, according to the city.

“We have a pretty large conflict point right now with the Indian Bend Wash going north/south right there and cars turning right and left off of Hayden to Chaparral to get to the (Hwy) 101,” says City of Scottsdale Transportation Planning Manager Nathan Domme. “What this underpass is going to do is take all the bikes and pedestrians and put them under the surface of the road and free up turning movement for the auto traffic, making the roadway work more efficiently.”

    Detours

All traffic heading east on Chaparral Road may continue eastbound one mile north on McDonald Drive or one mile south on Indian School Road to reach the 101 Freeway.

All traffic heading west on Chaparral Road may turn left or right on Pima Road or Granite Reef Road to continue traveling west.

Bicyclists and pedestrians are asked to use the multi-use path on the west side of Hayden Road between Camelback Road and Jackrabbit Road for through access since the existing underpass just south of Chaparral Road  as well as portions of the Indian Bend Wash multi-use path adjacent to Chaparral Road will be closed.

    Timeline

The intersection is planned to reopen Sept. 1 while the new underpass will be fully accessible by Feb. 1, 2025.

Domme says the complete road closure through the summer ensures road work moves faster and in time before schools reopen.

Work will take place Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. according to the city. Occasional night and weekend work will be necessary for the installation of a waterline being built in conjunction with the project and due to high temperatures during the day.
