SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A big day for a local schoolyard.

The groundbreaking for a new community schoolyard taking place at John F. Kennedy Elementary School in Scranton.

The Scranton school district was identified as a top candidate for a public land trust which led to the renovation.

This is the first of three planned in Scranton turning asphalt to green space.

The students at JFK got involved too. They helped to create the design of the new yard.

Officials say it’s a big step forward to enhance outdoor spaces in Lackawanna County.

“Its a time for them to get a little fresh air, its a time for them to be outside, its a time for them to be creative, and to just be kids, and that’s what really really important. We know education is the foundation for success, but we cant have that without giving children time to play and be creative,” explained Dr. Erin Keating, Superintendent of the Scranton School District.
