SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Volunteers are helping clean up a local cemetery that’s been neglected for some time.

Seven groups gathered in West Scranton at Washburn Street Cemetery.

Volunteers spent several hours pulling weeds, cutting up downed trees from recent storms, and cleaning headstones.

The beautification project was organized by “ Christmas Miracles from Heaven ” a non-profit formed with a mission to give back to the less fortunate in our communities and to honor area veterans.

“Being a new non-profit and wanting to help the community, you kind of sit and wonder ‘Well where do I start?’. I saw a lot of posts on Facebook about how bad the cemetery was, and thought instead of sitting behind a computer and worrying about how bad it is let’s step up and do something about it,” said Amy Cusick the founder of Christmas Miracles from Heaven.

Washburn Street Cemetery is the final resting place for former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s father Hugh Rodham.

A fifth cleanup is scheduled for next Saturday, beginning at 8;00 a.m. The group says folks bringing extra lawnmowers, weed trimmers, and chainsaws would be appreciated!
