    Investigators in Robert Baron case honored in Scranton

    SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Local law enforcement was acknowledged on Wednesday for helping solve one of the most significant murder cases in Lackawanna County history.

    The District Attorney’s Office recognized those who played a crucial role in the Robert Baron case.

    The ceremony honored the extraordinary efforts of individuals and law enforcement in bringing justice to the Baron family.

    Robert Baron Sr. tragically lost his life in what was described as a “burglary gone wrong” in 2017.

    Six years later, the killer, 37-year-old Justin Schuback, was caught .

    “In total, it took six years to find Mr. Baron’s remains, and to make an arrest in large part due to the advances in cellphone technology that allowed us to locate the remains and track Schuback’s every movement,” said Lackawanna County District Attorney Mark Powell.

    Lamour Branch murder case heading to trial

    Wednesday, District Attorney Mark Powell credited the team effort between all of the law enforcement agencies involved in the murder investigation.

    “Month after month investigators would review evidence, share information, and devote resources because we all knew, a, there had been a killer on the loose,” Powell explained.

    Six awards were presented to those who played a critical role in breaking the case.

    Lackawanna County Detective Lisa Bauer, our lead affiant was involved in the case from day one. Forensic specialist Sheryl Turner, who was also involved in this case from the onset, and had the foresight to preserve the defendant’s cellphone data. FBI agent Michael Sabric, a world-renowned expert in range to tower information. The New York State K-9 unit, it was the New York State K-9 unit that was best in the field. Pennsylvania State Trooper Corporal Greg Allen conducted interrogations in order to allow the defendant just enough rope to incriminate himself and District Attorney Sra Varela, my co-counsel throughout the trial frankly who did most of the heavy lifting.

    Some of the Baron family were present. Brittany Baron, the daughter of Robert Baron, gave this statement to 28/22 news:

    We would like to sincerely thank every single person who caught us to this point to bring my father Robert Baron home and finally getting that killer off the street.

    Justin Schuback was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole , along with seven and a half to 15 years for robbery and burglary.
