Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.

The first national poll since President Joe Biden ended his reelection bid suggests an extremely tight race is shaping up between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.

Harris leads Trump by 44% to 42% among registered voters surveyed for a Reuters/Ipsos poll –the same poll they were tied in a week ago before the vice president launched her campaign.

Trump however leads by one point in a new NPR/PBS News/Marist National Poll, which shows the candidates nearly tied at 46% to 45%. Also in that poll, 9% of voters report they are undecided between Trump and Harris.

All of this comes with an important caveat; Trump leads Harris in polls from five battleground states that could determine the election's outcome.

However, those surveys were taken before Harris officially became a candidate for president.
