Large Wine Production Facility in Hopland Criticized for Wastewater Hazards
A massive wine production facility in Hopland is being ordered to clean up its act. In recent years, neighbors around Ray’s Station Winery off Highway 175 have complained of rotten smells coming from the factory ranging from rotten eggs to sewage. The North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board has approved several orders over the past month to address the issue, including a Cleanup and Abatement Order and Investigative Order. It requires the facility’s owner, Vintage Wine Estates, to come up with an urgent corrective plan by Friday and provide information to regulators necessary to oversee improvements. Ray’s Station Winery has expanded rapidly over the last 12 years, causing problems with wastewater disposal and risking contamination with groundwater and surface water connected to the Russian River.

Cal Fire arrests man on suspicion of sparking Pocket Fire with lawn mower
Cal Fire officers arrested a Cloverdale man in connection the Pocket Fire that was sparked Saturday in Sonoma County. The Pocket Fire burned 11 acres, north of Geyserville. According to Cal Fire, it was sparked by someone using a riding lawn mower to cut dead annual grasses that were 4 feet tall. It's the second arrest Cal Fir's Sonoma-Lake-Napa law enforcement unit has made this week in connection to wildland fires. The first arrest was made after someone started a grass fire by using a weed-eater in dry grass. The suspect in the Pocket Fire was arrested on suspicion of a felony charge of causing a fire of a structure or forest land and three misdemeanors. According to Cal Fire, they are doing maximum enforcement on human-caused wildfires due to current fire conditions.
Missing Russian River swimmer found dead Friday
MONTE RIO -- A man who went missing Wednesday while swimming in the Russian River near Monte Rio has been found dead, the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office said Sunday.The missing swimmer, Nasoni Tuitoga, 28, of Santa Rosa, was found Friday afternoon, the sheriff's office said.Sonoma County sheriff's deputies and Sonoma County Fire District personnel had been searching for the man since receiving a 911 call about 6:17 p.m. Wednesday. The man was last seen near Villa Grande, an unincorporated community located on the river.Deputies and firefighters were unable to locate the man and called in additional support to help the search, including the Sonoma County Sheriff's Marine Unit, Sonoma County Sheriff Volunteer Dive Team and the Monte Rio Fire Protection District. The search was suspended at dark.Thursday morning, the search resumed with the Napa County Sheriff's Office's Marine Unit and Dive Team supporting the search efforts with its remote-operated underwater vehicle. The search was once again suspended at dark and resumed Friday.
