SEAFORD – Monday, June 10 was an historical day for Sussex Montessori as the elementary school which opened its doors in September 2020 held its first commencement ceremony of sixth grade graduates.

Donned in green caps and attire of their choice, 34 graduates took their monumental walk down “celebration lane,” lined with school leaders and staff, and a host of family and friends cheering them on.

Each graduate received an award certificate and personal recognition from teachers as they crossed the platform signifying their transition from elementary into middle school.

Graduates Rachel Chisenhall of Georgetown and Henry Bly of Seaford reflected on their experience at Sussex Montessori School.  Rachel spoke of the love and support she received from her teachers during her four years at SMS, while Henry shared how he developed leadership skills through opportunities to participate in chess nationals and advanced math.

Commencement speaker was Sean Steward of Seaford, a founding board member of Sussex Montessori and the father of a 12-year-old graduate who has attended the school since its inception.

“Our goal is for you to be the first of many classes that will be a beacon in the state of how Montessori curriculum can change education in Delaware,” Mr. Steward said.

Many of the Montessori graduates will return to their home districts to continue their education, a longstanding vision of school board leaders.

Lisa Coldiron, Sussex Montessori’s Head of School, closed the ceremony by encouraging graduates to pursue their dreams and aspirations with confidence, courage, and a commitment to making the world a better place.

“Always remember that you are capable of making a difference in the world,” she told graduates. “Your kindness, empathy, and determination have the power to create positive change, both in your own lives and in the lives of others.”

Sussex Montessori School is the first and only public Montessori elementary school in Sussex County, and one of only two Montessori public charters in the state.
