Chevron announced on Friday that it will be relocating its corporate headquarters from San Ramon, California, to Houston, Texas. This move marks a massive shift for the company, which has been based in California since its founding over a century ago.

Mike Wirth, the chairman and CEO of Chevron, and Mark Nelson, the vice chairman, will gradually relocate to Houston by the end of 2024. Over the following five years, further company operations will be carried out. Chevron said that despite the relocation, some positions critical to maintaining its technical facilities, operations, and crude oil fields in California will continue to be located in the San Ramon offices. The business still runs two refineries and supplies more than 1,800 retail locations in the state.

Currently, Chevron employs around 2,000 people in San Ramon and approximately 7,000 in Houston. The decision to relocate is part of a broader trend of companies leaving California, often citing increased operating costs and the challenges posed by the state's stringent regulatory environment.

Chevron's move follows Elon Musk's recent announcement that his companies, SpaceX and X (formerly known as Twitter), will also be relocating to Texas. Musk attributed his decision to the SAFETY Act, a law signed by California Governor Gavin Newsom, which prohibits school districts from requiring teachers to inform parents if a child wishes to be identified by a different gender. He described the act as "the final straw" in his decision-making process.
