BERKELEY - Hundreds of homes and businesses lost power in the South Seaside Park section of the township on Monday afternoon, according to Jersey Central Power & Light.

The outage forced the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to close swimming areas at Island Beach State Park for about two hours on Monday, according to the state agency.

Electricity was restored just after 4 p.m. Monday and Island Beach was fully reopened at that time, according to the DEP.

About 350 customers were without power in the Berkeley portion of Ocean County’s northern barrier island, while 88 customers were also impacted in the borough of Seaside Park, according to the electric company, which was investigating the cause.
