The Seattle Kraken have placed Josh Mahura and John Hayden on waivers.

Jared McCann and Tye Kartye returned to practice today signalling they will be available for the season opener on Tuesday against the St. Louis Blues. Their returns meant two additional cuts needed to be made and HC Dan Bylsma and the rest of Kraken coaching staff decided it should be Ryan Winterton who stays with the NHL team and Mahura and Hayden who head to the AHL.

Winterton has been laying the ground work of an NHL promotion for some time now. He was a force with the Coachella Valley Firebirds last year and impressed during his nine game trial with the Kraken as well. A healthy lineup might see him start as a healthy scratch with the opportunity to jump in for an injured or underperforming teammate.

Hayden did his best to secure a spot but ultimately came up short. He played in four pre-season games recording a goal and an assist. He also dropped the gloves with 6’6 Vancouver Canucks prospect Vilmer Alriksson in a spirited tilt.

Mahura was signed in the offseason by the Kraken to serve as their seventh defenseman but after four pre-season games the franchise decided to play him on waivers. He’ll likely be the first call-up when needed if he goes unclaimed.

The Kraken’s opening lineup is set as they hope to have a bounce back season and prove a lot of people wrong.
