At every Seattle Kraken home game, during the break in the first period, the lights dim except for a single spotlight that shines on the game's Heroes of the Deep.

The Heroes of the Deep award is nominated by members of the community and includes a $32,000 grant to benefit a charity. The funds are provided by the Kraken's charitable foundation, One Roof. During Thursday night's game against the Philadelphia Flyers, the Kraken announced that the Heroes of the Deep award was given to the local chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving in memory of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau. The brothers were killed by a drunk driver six weeks ago while visiting family in New Jersey for their sister's wedding.

The void left in the hockey community by the loss of two young, exceptional players has been felt worldwide. Memorials and tributes have been building in and around arenas, with several moments of silence being held in their honor before games.
