The Seattle Kraken have signed the most sought-after defenceman in free agency, agreeing to a seven-year, $7.143M deal.

The 30-year-old is still feeling the effects of a Stanley Cup celebration but will now be on his way to the Kraken. Pierre LeBrun was first to report it.

In the 2023-24 campaign, Montour scored eight goals and 33 points in 66 games. He also contributed three goals and 11 points in 24 playoff games.

Montour's offensive production took a bit of a dip from the 16 goals and 73 points he registered the year before but his overall game remained intact. His skating has also been a strong suit for him and he uses it well. He maintains could gaps allowing him to defend the rush and he uses his foot speed for puck retrievals which allows him to start breakout.

The Kraken now have seven defensemen under contract with the lowest-paid player being Will Borgen at $2.7M. The Kraken have beefed up their defence core but will have a lot of work to do up front. Matty Beniers and Eeli Tolvanen still need contracts after receiving qualifying offers yesterday.

Montour will help improve the Kraken's power play. The former 2014 second-round has manned a power play with Aleksander Barkov, Matthew Tkachuk and Sam Reinhart for the past two seasons and will bring his skill and knowledge to a Seattle power play with Beniers, Jared McCann and possibly Shane Wright.

Listed at 6'0 and 194 lbs, Montour will be the second right-handed defenseman on the Kraken's roster.

GM Ron Francis has been vocal about his interest in being aggressive this offseason and the signing of Montour is a good start on staying true to his word.
