More than a century ago, wealthy Seattleites began constructing mansions and summer cottages on the outskirts of Emerald City, in Medina, Washington. Located across Lake Washington from Seattle, Medina was once only accessible via ferry before the I-90 bridge was constructed in 1956. The idyllic area is mostly residential, with few commercial businesses, and has large parks, open pastures, and pristine woodlands.

Medina has long been known as the “Gold Coast” and is considered one of the city’s most sought-after neighborhoods, especially after the influx of wealth amassed by pioneering tech executives in the 1980s and 1990s. Among its richest and most well-known residents are billionaires Jeff Bezos , though he’s moved his home base to Florida in recent years, and Bill Gates , who famously owns a 66,000-square-foot waterfront compound.

Now, you can own a piece of this historic area with a one-of-a-kind property that’s newly listed for $14.1 million. Called The Gables, it is considered to be the oldest home in Medina. The idyllic area of Medina is devoid of nearly anything but residences and features lush parks, pastures, and pristine landscaping. The home is listed by Heija Nunn of Windermere Real Estate/Luxury Portfolio International.

The entryway, with its cheetah print-carpeted staircase, leads to the fireside living room.

Built in 1903 and completed in 1908, The Gables was constructed long before the area was dubbed “Gold Coast.” It was initially designed with gabled roofs and featured fairytale craftsman-style architecture by Bebb & Mendel for businessman Edward Webster. The home has changed hands several times over the years but was given a complete renovation and restoration in 2007 by Toth Construction and interiors firm Rocky Rochon, both of which specialize in preserving historic homes.

Sitting on a 0.75-acre plot of land, the 8,750-square-foot home has six bedrooms and six bathrooms. It’s ensconced by towering trees, manicured landscaping, lush gardens, and trimmed lawns, and fronted by a motor court and deep porches. The home is being sold by a couple who spent much time in England and fell in love with the home because it reminded them of the English countryside. Designer Rochon explained that the design concept is an “English men’s club meets Seattle farm home,” which is seen best through farmhouse-style materials and dark, moody interiors with plenty of rich textures. There are nods to British-style interior design throughout the home, and as part of the renovation, they refigured the layout as well.

There’s a formal entryway that features a grand staircase embellished with a cheetah print runner. The home is warm and inviting, with many sumptuous living areas with fireplaces and built-in daybeds for curling up with a book (or, more likely, a tablet).

The main level features a modern, custom kitchen with steel beams and a breakfast nook with a built-in banquette. Other rooms include a wood-paneled library, mudroom, wine cellar, formal dining room, office, and gym. The bedrooms are filtered throughout the first and second floors and overlook the backyard.

Outside, there’s a pool, deck, outdoor dining, barbecue, and covered seating areas, all just a few moments from Lake Washington and the hustle and bustle of Seattle.
