Seattle Seahawks Training Camp 2024 Preview

Although this team finished 9-8 last season, this team is on the outside looking in for a playoff berth. They lost a lot of names like Quandre Diggs, Jamal Adams, Bobby Wagner, Jordyn Brooks, and Jason Peters. They didn’t really do a lot to replace those guys either. They did shore up some of their offensive and defensive line with Christian Haynes and Byron Murphy II. They also drafted 2 secondary guys from Auburn in DJ James and Nehemiah Pritchett, but other than that, there’s not a lot of gain for this team. However, games are won on the field and not on paper so let’s get into this Seattle Seahawks Training Camp preview.

Three Position Battles To Watch

Left Guard: Laken Tomlinson vs. Christian Haynes

The first battle in the Seattle Seahawks Training Camp preview is at left guard between Laken Tomlinson vs. Christian Haynes. Sure, the Seahawks just signed Laken Tomlinson and he is a veteran in this league, but why not let the young buck have a shot? I liked Christian Haynes a lot in this draft. He’s a mean little shit with great technique. Seattle was lucky to get Christian Haynes in the 3rd round. While Haynes’ size is the biggest concern surrounding him, if he can overcome that, he has a solid shot to start for this Seattle OL.

QB: Geno Smith vs. Sam Howell

I never bought the Geno Smith career revival narrative for a second. You can’t base a solid opinion on a QB after only 1 good year. That proved to be the point this year because he took a step back. Geno Smith started his career with a lot of bad seasons and he had one decent season and everyone lost their minds. Now, Geno Smith might have his seat a little warm. The Seahawks traded for former starting QB in Sam Howell. Although Washington was not kind to Howell, Howell did show flashes of upside as a young QB. Geno Smith is 33 and is basically on his way out. Are we sure Geno Smith is the starting QB at the start of the year? Does he finish as the starting QB, I am not so sure.

Outside Linebacker: Darrell Taylor vs. Boye Mafe vs. Derick Hall

Our last position battle in this Seattle Seahawks training camp preview is between Boye Mafe vs. Derick Hall. Coincidentally enough, Garrett had this as a position battle to watch last year as well, except with Darrell Taylor in the mix. Now, I think it’s between Boye Mafe and Derick Hall. Maye SHOULD have this matchup locked up after a strong season last year that including 50 tackles and 9 sacks. However, Hall was a 2nd round pick in 2022, to say he doesn’t have a chance to earn some solid playing time would be a mistake. We will see if Hall makes the most out of his opportunities.

Ready To Breakout: K’Von Wallace

K’Von Wallace was with the Cardinals and the Titans last year, starting 12 games in total for the season for both teams together. He was really coming into his own last season. With the departures of Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs, K’Von Wallace has a solid chance to come in and make an impact. While the Seahawks also signed Rayshawn Jenkins. Wallace is able to play corner and safety, that versatility will make him ready to breakout for the Seahawks.

Rookie To Watch: Christian Haynes

I mentioned earlier when talking about the position battle between him and Laken Tomlinson, but I liked Haynes out of the draft and I’m not sold that Tomlinson is the guaranteed starter. Haynes is smart and mean, while undersized, he will do what is asked of him to the best of his ability in an asshole type of way. That could be enough to make an impact and steal the starting spot.

Fantasy Sleeper: Jake Bobo

We might be reaching a little deep into the depth chart but when you’re top 3 WRs are DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, most WRs are considered a sleeper after that. Jake Bobo had 19 catches for 196 yards and 3 TDs (2 receiving and 1 rushing). But, if you’re playing in a deep league for fantasy (mine has a roster of 20) those late round finds are crucial to success. We play best ball so even Jake Bobo can have a day and it makes a difference on your fantasy team. One game he had 4 catches for 63 yards and 1 TD. That would be good for roughly 16 points in any fantasy league. Might be worth a late-round flier.

A few things to look out for: Sam Howell is starting at some point in this year. I don’t think Geno Smith gets you where you want to be and they pivot to Howell. This team’s defense lost of a lot of pieces but there’s still talent on both sides of the ball. In a weak NFC, they might have just enough to get a playoff berth. Time will tell though.
