'Seal' Washed Ashore at Seattle Shelter Is Actually a Must-See Pit Bull Named Porkchop

Sometimes a shelter animal comes along and they just change everybody's lives, you know? Immediately, they're a star, and for good reason. As sad as it is that not all shelter dogs get this treatment, the ones who do are really lucky - and really special.

For one Pit Bull in Seattle, stardom was her calling. On Tuesday, July 16th, a Seattle shelter posted a video of a "seal" they'd found washed ashore, and what it turned out to be was so much better than a seal could ever be:

The Seattle Animal Shelter is lucky I don't live anywhere near there. Otherwise, I would've busted through the wall like the Kool-Aid Man to meet her. I would lay down my life for Porkchop.

According to the Seattle Animal Shelter, Porkchop is a "Pocket-Pittie" because of how teeny tiny she is; she's just under 30 pounds, and she's pretty short. She's at least part Staffordshire Terrier too, they think, and she's just the sweetest girl they've ever met. Everything about her, from her beautiful eyes to her epic trots, screamed, "TAKE ME HOME!"

Somebody did. This video garnered over a million views and nearly 200,000 likes, and somebody was so enamored by Porkchop that they took her home before somebody could ask if she wanted applesauce with that. The shelter even said she was good with kids, and in the video we can see that she did get along pretty well with Tater Tot, another Pocket-Pittie who seems to ahve been adopted as well. If you're in the mood for a food named pup, though, they still have options, including a Pit Bull mix named Bubble Tea and a Husky named Tiramisu. I think I need them all.

Social Media is a Lifesaver for Shelter Dogs

Pretty much as soon as whoever runs the Seattle Animal Shelter account posted this video, Porkchop was a done deal. The video itself was hilarious and the narrator deserved an award, truly, but it also showed everyone what Porkchop was really like. Pictures can be deceiving; some shelter intake photos that get posted on the website can turn people off.

Pit Bulls tend to sit in shelters for a long time, especially if they're older; people gravitate toward puppies, and a lot of people opt for the smaller, "calmer" breeds over Pit Bulls, Staffies, Bully breeds in general. Many places have breed restrictions that prospective parents need to be mindful of.

Social media has made it easier than ever for shelters to spread the world about their animals, though, and it's given them a place to post candid pictures and videos that show their dogs having fun and living life, not just cowering in a kennel because they're scared. Once a shelter goes viral with one animal, you can expect people to start looking at the whole selection, and it's all good things from there. I'm glad Porkchop found her forever home so quickly, and I'm hopeful she'll be a TikTok star soon enough!
