Two University of Washington students have invented the SignAloud gloves, which translate American Sign Language into speech or text.

The gloves use sensors to capture gestures, transmitting data wirelessly to a computer for translation.

The goal was to develop lightweight ergonomic gloves to be used every day and bridge communication gap between ASL users and non-signers.

The students were awarded the Lemelson-MIT Student Prize for their invention.
