Former Seattle Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny.

Just six years after being selected in the first round of the NFL Draft, oft-injured running back Rashaad Penny retired on Tuesday.

The San Diego State product was limited to just 45 games (11 starts) across his six seasons, as he battled numerous injuries during his career.

Penny played in a career-high 14 games in his 2018 rookie season with the Seattle Seahawks but was behind Chris Carson and Mike Davis on the depth chart. Penny suffered a season-ending torn ACL in Week 14 of the 2019 campaign and he didn't return until December of the 2020 season, appearing in just three contests.

The 28-year-old again missed time due to injury in 2021, but when he finally got healthy toward the end of the season, he showed what made him a former 27th overall draft pick.

Penny won NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors for his performance in Week 17 against the Detroit Lions when he posted 170 yards and two touchdowns on 25 rushing attempts. Then in Week 18 vs. the Arizona Cardinals, he ran for a career-high 190 yards via 23 carries and scored once as well.

Penny finished the 2021 season with career bests in rushing attempts (119), rushing yards (749), rushing touchdowns (six), rushing first downs (28), rushing yards per game (74.9), rushing attempts per game (11.9) and yards per carry (6.3). His yards per carry across 10 contests led the NFL.

Penny again went down with a season-ending injury early in the 2022 season, suffering a broken fibula in Week 5 against the New Orleans Saints. Penny played three games with the Philadelphia Eagles last season and signed with the Carolina Panthers on May 6.
