World Champion for Panettone Leads a New Bakery Open in Manhattan
Realmuto Alta Pasticceria, a 5,000-square-foot all-day Italian cafe and pastry shop is in soft open mode starting today at 117 Seventh Ave South, the longtime home of the West Village Gourmet Garage supermarket. Owner Francesco Realmuto, who also owns Filaga Pizzeria and L’Arte del Gelato in Manhattan has tapped Giuseppe Zito to lead the bakery — a decorated pastry chef who has been a world champion for his panettone. On the sweet side expect bomboloni, cannoli, and more. There’s a full-service lunch and dinner component by Mauro Campanale, who also relocated to New York for the role, that includes several handmade pastas and other entries, as well as savory pastries like salted cod macarons and fava bean and pecorino tarts. By night, there will eventually be apertivi options as well. The space — decorated to look like a “vibrant indoor Italian piazza” seats around 50, according to a spokesperson. Reservations are up online.
