Sedalia’s city council received recommendations from an engineering firm that could reopen one lane of the Washington Street Bridge within a month.

At a work session Tuesday afternoon, the council received a presentation from HDR on what repairs the bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad will need following its closure in late February. City Administrator Kelvin Shaw says the problem isn’t with the span itself, but the approaches to it.

Shaw says some additional work will then be needed to allow both sides to use the bridge.

Shaw says designing and completing new pilings to allow resumption of both lanes of traffic across the Washington Street Bridge would take about a year. The city council will need to formally approve the project and amend the budget to fund the project, which could come up at the next regularly scheduled meeting Monday.
