In light of the 6.4 magnitude earthquakerequired that struck Vancouver Island, BC, Canada today, July 11, 2024, many Washington State residents are wondering if and when they need to be concerned about tsunamis. The earthquake was located within 32 miles of the Peace Arch Border Crossing in Blaine, Washington.

The US Tsunami Warning System has issued a notice that no tsunami warning, advisory, watch, or threat is required at this time. In order to detect tsunamis, NOAA monitors seismic data regarding earthquakes and measures a variety of factors to determine the danger.

Most tsunamis begin in the Pacific Ocean along the coasts of Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, and Hawaii. Water levels, the depth of the earthquake, and location are all contributing factors.

Coastal areas in all of these locations have posted Tsunami routes for vehicles and walkers. In the case of a tsunami, sirens and warnings will go off, and residents will be warned to evacuate immediately following the Tsunami routes.
