Locals and visitors alike have been fascinated and chilled by the mysterious activities that intertwine the rich winery history with eerie occurrences that have left many wondering if spirits still wander the grounds.
A Storied Past
Our story began in the early 20th century when the winery went by a different name, Pommerelle Wine Company. It was founded in 1912. Over the decades, the winery evolved through a variety of mergers and transformations, and the name Chateau Ste. Michelle was finally settled on in 1967. This iconic estate is built in French style with an air of timeless elegance to the picturesque setting.
While the wine is a huge draw to this architectural marvel, there is more than just the wine spirits on the premises. For decades, tales of ghostly apparitions and unexplained phenomena have become a part of the winery's charm. Many of these stories are centered around the chateau itself, where various guests and employees have reported strange happenings.
Ghostly Encounters
One of the more persistent legends, is that of a ghost of a former winemaker said to haunt the wine cellars. More than one visitor has reported seeing a shadowy figure moving through the dimly lit corridors. It has also been noted that the faint smell of wine always accompanies the shadowy figure. Believed to be the ghost of one of the early winemakers on the estate, he passed away tragically under mysterious circumstances. He was apparently very dedicated to his craft of wine-making since he is frequently seen in and around the wine cellars.
In addition to our mysterious winemaker, there are tales of a lady dressed in elegant vintage white clothing roaming the chateau halls. She frequently glides gently and silently through various rooms and disappears into walls. Many speculate that perhaps she is the spirit of a former resident or someone connected to the winery's early days. Who knows, maybe she is the wife of the mysterious spirit in the wine cellars.
Other common occurrences frequently reported by visitors and employees are those of disembodied footsteps echoing down the halls and throughout the chateau. These mysterious disembodied footsteps are especially noticeable during the evenings when the estate is quiet and still. Many have also reported hearing whispering and voices, even laughter when others aren’t around. This has created an eerie atmosphere that is difficult, at best, to ignore.
Paranormal Investigations
More than one paranormal investigator has been curious about the strange happenings at Chateau Ste. Michelle. Many paranormal teams have visited the winery estate equipped with various ghost-hunting equipment, such as EMF detectors, audio recorders, and thermal cameras.
Such investigators have yielded fascinating results, including unexplained temperature drops, EVP (Electronic voice phenomena), anomalous readings, and recordings capturing faint, unidentifiable voices.
One particularly notable investigation in 2018 involved a well-known paranormal research group team who spent the night at the chateau. There were many unaccounted-for sounds and movements during the night. This has served to reinforce the belief that the winery estate is indeed haunted.
Furthermore, the team conducted a séance in the wine cellar in hopes of making contact with the spirit of the winemaker. Unfortunately, no definitive communication was established, although several participants reported a sensation of unexplainable presence during the séance.

Chateau Ste. Michelle has remained a popular destination despite the haunted reputation. With the allure of a ghostly presence, many are intrigued by the element of mystery and excitement of wine tastings at this winery. Occasionally, the estate has been host to haunted tours and paranormal nights, attractive events to large crowds eager to explore the charm of a haunted chateau.
While many remain skeptical, others see the winery as a fascinating glimpse into the storied past of the winery blended with folklore. Regardless of what a person chooses to believe, there is no denying the charm and allure of the Chateau Ste. Michelle is where the past and the present intertwine seamlessly in a tangible and spectral form.
Clearly, part of the charm of Chateau Ste. Michelle is the unique dimension of the winery intertwined with the ghostly tales of yesteryear.
