The transition to a 4-day school week has been a topic of interest in various Washington State educational settings, particularly in rural or financially constrained districts. The academic outcomes of this shift are mixed and can vary depending on the specific context of the schools involved. Many parents are concerned about how this will affect their children’s educations, not the family budget.

Some of the statistics that we’ve gathered are as follows:

Neutral or Slightly Negative Impact on Academic Achievement

Several studies indicate that the shift to a 4-day school week generally does not significantly improve student achievement. Some research suggests there may be a slight decline in academic performance, particularly in subjects like math and reading. For example, a study published by the RAND Corporation found that students in 4-day school week districts in Oregon showed slightly lower math scores than their 5-day counterparts.

Another study in Colorado found minimal differences in academic achievement between students on a 4-day week and those on a traditional schedule, although some districts experienced slight declines.

    Improved Attendance and Behavior

Some districts report improvements in student attendance and reduced disciplinary issues after transitioning to a 4-day week. This is often attributed to the extra day off, which allows students to rest, attend medical appointments, or engage in extracurricular activities without missing school.

For students who want more time off, this is an ideal solution. It gives students extra days of rest and more time with their friends.

Mixed Results Based on Demographics and Implementation

The academic outcomes can vary depending on factors such as the socioeconomic status of the students, the quality of instruction during the four days, and how the additional day off is utilized. For example, wealthier districts or those with strong community support may see less negative impact or even some positive outcomes, while more disadvantaged districts might experience greater challenges.

According to research, younger students, particularly those in elementary school, might be more negatively impacted by the reduced instructional time compared to older students.

    Teacher and Student Satisfaction

Teacher satisfaction increases with the 4-day week, providing more time for planning, professional development, and personal activities. If teachers are more energized and effective in the classroom, this can indirectly benefit students.

Plus, some teachers are so overworked that the extra day off translates to a more restful break and more stamina during the school week.

    Long-Term Data and Research Gaps

While some short-term data is available, there is a need for more longitudinal studies to assess the long-term impact of a 4-day school week on academic outcomes. Many studies focus on the immediate years following the transition, and the long-term effects on college readiness and career success are less well-documented.

The academic outcomes of transitioning Washington Students to a 4-day school week are complex and context-dependent. While some districts report neutral or slightly negative effects on academic achievement, others highlight improved attendance, behavior, and teacher satisfaction.

The overall effectiveness of this schedule likely depends on the specific implementation and the needs of the student population. More research, particularly long-term studies, is needed to fully understand the impact of this educational model. What do you think? Is it good to switch Washington State schools to a 4-day school week? Why or why not?
