One of the most famous unsolved crimes in Washington States history, is that of D.B. Cooper. This case has intrigued amateur sleuths and investigators alike for over five decades. Using a pseudonym, D.B. Cooper secured his place in criminal history as that of the most famous hijacking in history for Washington State.

    The Crime

Northwest Airlines Flight 305 on November 24, 1971, started out like any other flight of that era. Passengers were boarded in Portland, Oregon and headed to Seattle, Washington. It was a simple routine domestic flight, until D.B. Cooper changed the course of the trip.

Cooper himself portrayed an average middle-aged man. His calm demeanor was just a front as he presented one of the flight attendants a note stating that he had a bomb. He then showed her a briefcase of what appeared to be explosives.

He went on to demand $200,000 in cash as well as four parachutes, a fuel truck that he wanted to meet them in Seattle and refuel the plan as he plotted his plan of escape. Although none of the flight attendants inspected his briefcase fully, it appeared to be full of explosives at casual glance.

Airline authorities quickly complied under duress to his demands. The plane, a Boeing 7f27, landed at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEATAC) where his demands were met as per his instructions.

Flight crew and passengers, with the exception of the six crew members, were all released. Most of the passengers were none the wiser as to what was actually happening.

Cooper then instructed the flight crew to fly to Mexico City. The aircraft was refueled and took off in the night from SEATAC. Cooper and the flight crew were the only ones aboard the aircraft at this time.

    The Mysterious Disappearance

What happened next is hotly debated, but the end result is that somewhere, over rugged terrain of Southwestern Washington State, D.B. Cooper vanished parachute and all from the plane with the ransom money.

The plane landed safely in Reno, Nevada, but the hijacker was nowhere to be found. It was as if he had vanished into thin air. How did he seemingly vanish? No one is quite certain of when exactly he jumped from the rear door of the plane.

In spite of a massive manhunt and exhaustive investigation by the FBI, D.B. Cooper literally vanished without a trace. The search was challenging at bests thanks to the challenging terrain and the fact that no one was quite certain of when and where he exited the aircraft.

There was also a lack of evidence as to whether or not he survived the jump. Thus, the mysterious disappearance of D.B. Cooper has remained open for the past 45 years. Finally, in f2016, the FBI formally closed the case, but many investigators and amateur investigators are still searching. The intrigue of his fate is intriguing to many.

    The Investigation

In response to the hijacking, the FBI launched one of the most extensive investigations in history. With over 800 potential suspects, there was plenty of information to sift through. However, none of the 800 potential suspects could be conclusively connected to the crime.

Witnesses offered up a variety of plausible explanations which only served to fuel the complexity of the case even more. There was never any concrete motive for the crime either. D.B. Cooper may have committed the perfect crime.

Newspapers and social media were also taunted by cryptic letters and messages allegedly from D.B. Cooper himself. It’s clear that D.B. Cooper was very confident and knowledgeable on planning out his heist. Many would even consider him to be cocky.

In 1980, nine years after the crime, there was an intriguing breakthrough when a young boy, Brian Ingram, found a package of the money buried in the sand of the Columbia River. The money, partially decomposed and degraded by the water, was indeed confirmed to be part of the ransom money.

DNA evidence wasn’t what is is today so unfortunately, a lot of the evidence wasn’t usable or handled like it would have been handled today.

Unfortunately, this only served to deepen the mystery of the crime. The rest of the money, as of yet, has never been found. The discovery of the money didn’t offer any further clues of the crime or the fate of D.B. Cooper himself.

    Theories and Speculations

As in any crime, a variety of theories have emerged over the years. This only serves to deepen the speculation and mystery of the murky case. Many believe that D.B. Cooper himself perished when he jumped. Perhaps from the elements or a poorly executed parachute maneuver.

Others suggest that he may have survived and lived out his days in hiding or under another pseudonym. Still others theorize that he was an expert parachutist who planned the heist meticulously and escaped from the plane with ease.

One particularly possibilities is that he may have been a disgruntled airline employee or someone with military experience. The theory is supported by the precision knowledge that D.B. Cooper showed regarding the aircraft and parachutes he asked for. Unfortunately, none of the evidence is conclusive and there have been no leads to anyone regarding the crime.

    The Cultural Impact

D.B. Cooper has become a legend in American history. The case has inspired innumerable books, documentaries, and a feature film. The story has been explored in a variety of ways including media and researchers alike. Each interpretation adds a new layer to the myths that surround the hijacker. The story has fueled public fascination and speculative stories.

The intrigue and impact of the crime have extended beyond pop culture, beyond legal and law enforcement circles. The name, D.B. Cooper immediately brings the crime to mind for most Washington State residents.

Today, thanks in part to the D.B. Cooper case, the crime has influenced the way that hijackings are handled and spurred changes in aviation security protocols and emergency responses. This daring heist remains a stark reminder of human ingenuity and the limits of law enforcement capabilities.

To date, the D.B. Cooper case remains one of the most intriguing and enduring mysteries in American Aviation criminal history. In spite of extensive investigations and innumerable theories, the fate and identity of the infamous hijacker remain a mystery.

The rugged terrain of Washington State landscape serves as a backdrop for the crime of the decade that continues to elude and fascinate investigators and amateur sleuths alike. Clearly, the legend of D.B. Cooper persists as one of the most enigmatic and audacious crimes in history for many generations to come. Do you remember the crime? Where were you when you first heard about D.B. Cooper?
