Washington has recently joined a national initiative aimed at reducing recidivism among individuals exiting prison. This campaign focuses on providing support and resources to help formerly incarcerated individuals reintegrate into society successfully. Key components of the initiative include enhanced access to education, job training, mental health services, and housing assistance.

The goal is to break the cycle of re-offending and promote successful transitions back into the community by collaborating with various community organizations and stakeholders. This effort reflects a growing recognition of the importance of rehabilitation over punishment, emphasizing the need for systemic changes to support long-term success for those leaving the criminal justice system.

The directive, signed by Washington State Governor Jay Inslee, is focused on ensuring that incarcerated individuals are connected with the services required to lead successful lives outside of the prison walls.

The goal is to develop a comprehensive entry and exit process tailored to each individual’s needs. The process includes concerns such as housing, health care, employment, substance use treatment, and mental health services. They will also assist each person in obtaining a Washington State Identification card or driver’s license and securing access to social services.

The ultimate goal is to set these persons up for success in life and help them stay on the right path. By combining state services with other services, the hope is that those who sincerely want to change will change and can now be successful members of society. What do you think? Should Washington State be spending money on this endeavor?
