Like a lot of other cities in Washington, Bellingham is facing a challenge to house the homeless. At any given time, there are approximately 742 people in Whatcom County alone who are homeless, and the numbers are growing daily.

One in four families in Whatcom County is unable to afford their basic needs. Forced to choose between eating and having a roof over their heads, many are turning to charities to help make ends meet. With grocery prices soaring and wages staying approximately the same, many struggle to make ends meet. We can’t forget to factor in the cost of rent as well. Is there a cure?

As the crisis continues growing, more people than ever before are flocking to Bellingham seeking refuge. This trend is highlighted by a recent video that a Washington State Police Officer recorded. By showing compassion instead of disdain, this officer made a huge difference in this young mans life.

The simple act of giving the young man a bus ticket made a huge difference to that man. The Tacoma man explains that he is homeless and has been moving around in search of a job and shelter. He’s not alone. Many are in the same boat.

Unfortunately, although the word is out in homeless encampments that Bellingham has plenty of things to offer, they don’t have anything more than many other towns in Washington State. The lack of support in smaller towns creates a need for those seeking jobs and shelter to travel to larger towns such as Bellingham and other larger towns in the region.

Many homeless people move into the woods and create their encampments where small populations of homeless people congregate. As more and more people venture to such areas as Bellingham, it’s a reminder that there is a story behind each homeless person's plight. What are your thoughts on the state of homelessness in Washington? Do you think there’s a good solution? How can society help to reduce homelessness?

Gosh, I wonder why. It's Trump's fault right? It couldn't be the hubris from failed policy
