Keith’s Tommy Tisdale III and Camryn Chaney of Selma picked up one last gift after their high school graduations.

Tisdale and Chaney each received the Alexis Hunter Scholarships at a Selma City Council meeting last month. They were presented the $500 scholarship by JoAnn Hunter-Walker and Selma City Councilwoman Jannie Thomas.

The scholarship is named after Alexis Hunter, who was killed on Dec. 21, 2013. Former Selma City Council President Corey Bowie, Thomas and Hunter-Walker, Hunter’s mother, established the scholarship.

Tisdale and Camry easily met the scholarship requirements which included: residing in Ward 7, having a 2.5 grade point average (GPA), providing a college acceptance letter, writing an essay on gun violence and submitting a school transcript.

Tisdale, the Selma Times-Journal two-time basketball player of the year, wrote about promoting non-violence. He finished with a 3.9 GPA, 20 ACT score and will play college basketball at Brewton Parker College.

Camry, who will attend Alabama A&M, also wrote about promoting non-violence. She finished with a 3.4 GPA.
