An Atlanta church group toured the city of Selma a week after the Fourth of July holiday.

About 50 members of Shiloh Mass Baptist Church toured the Queen City and walked across the Edmund Pettus Bridge during a one-day trip. Several members of the congregation who took the three-hour trip were over 70 years old and always wanted to visit Selma.

“We came to Selma for our history and march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge on Bloody Sunday in 1965,” King said. “Our children need to know the sacrifice our ancestors made on Bloody Sunday.’”

Weems said she was grateful the church visited Selma, known for hosting the annual Bridge Crossing Jubilee during the first weekend of March.

“We’re glad for the experience to see Selma and the Edmund Pettus Bridge,” Weems said.

Sims said it was important to tour Selma and see a historic town overcome racial injustice, led by Martin Luther King Jr. and John Lewis, resulting in the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
