The Selma City Council unanimously approved the purchase of two used vehicle requests for a pair of department heads at the July 9 council meeting.

The seven council members present, including President Billy Young and council members Clay Carmichael, Jannie Thomas, Christie Thomas, Sam Randolph, Troy Harvill and Atkin Jemison all voted in favor of getting a truck and F-150 for the information technology department and public buildings departments. One vehicle costs $23,000 and $21,000 for the other. The funds came from line items and out of the 2024 budget.

The requests came from Mayor James Perkins Jr’s Mayor report. IT director John Kinnerson Jr. and public works director Henry Hicks Sr. both addressed the council on their need for these vehicles rather than use personal vehicles. Councilman Clay Carmichael said city employees get reimbursed for using their cars for business purposes.
