For the second straight time, the Selma City Council’s Work Session was held before its council meeting on Tuesday.

Highlighting the Work Session was a discussion of A to Z Environmental Company demolishing homes in Selma.

City Attorney Major Madison told the city council that 49 homes were subjected to demolition and would cost over $133,000. Treasurer Terri Barnes-Smith said the funds would come from an emergency fund set aside. She added that the money would be reimbursed after the demolition was completed. Madison said not all of the homes were damaged by the January 12, 2023 tornado that destroyed 40% of Selma.

Council members present at the meeting were: President Billy Young, Clay Carmichael, Jannie Thomas, Atkin Jemison, Sam Randolph, and Michael Johnson.

The meeting was rescheduled from July 18 to Tuesday because not enough council members would be present for a quorum.  With nine city council seats, five members are required for a meeting.
